An interview with Sun Affair

Sun Affair is a project by Wesley Stormer, a talented songwriter from Sydney, Australia. We had the opportunity to interview him about his latest single "New Year's Eve" featuring Aaron Gun.

"New Year's Eve" is the latest release of Sun Affair since 2021. What motivated you to create this track and what message do you hope your audience takes from it?

I’d always wanted to write a Christmas song so started writing the beginnings of what would become NYE a few years back thinking it would have a Christmas theme. The Christmas vibe wasn’t really working so I tried a few other angles and New Year’s Eve seemed to be a better fit.

I hope people hear the song around the holiday season, reflect on the year that’s been and know that despite where they’re at, it’s always possible to have a new beginning.

Can you tell us more about the production process of "New Year's Eve"?
The production came together bit by bit over a few years at a few spots across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and even London (via one late night zoom session). Blain Cunneen took on guitar & production duties and really brought the warmth and nostalgia to the track. A special mention to Sam Gill who laid down the sax!

Can you share a memorable moment from the creation of "New Year's Eve" that stands out to you?
Developing the vocal part with Aaron was an interesting time. I didn’t have much of the song recorded at that stage so I was singing it to him whilst I played the piano and I don’t think he was buying it. It probably sounded like something from a musical. Fortunately Aaron still believed in the song. We pushed through and we were both stoked with the end result.

"New Year's Eve" features Aaron Gun from Vinyl 45. How did this collaboration happen?
Aaron and I’d been friends for a few years and our bands gigged together all the time so he was always on my radar. When I was thinking of vocalists for NYE Aaron was the perfect choice. He’s got that raspy powerful rock voice that cuts through but also those high, soul tones when you need them.

Are there any specific bands or artists that have influenced the sound of Sun Affair?
Earth, Wind & Fire, Todd Rundgren and Tatsuro Yamashita.

What are the pros and cons of being an Australian-based musician?
Pros: Great weather for positive vibes and outdoor gigs/festivals
Cons: We’re on a massive island

What can fans expect from Sun Affair in 2024?
More of this, more of that and maybe some surprise collabs (!?!?!)
